There is a Google Ads deadline in September 2026, and there is a different one in February 2027. They cover different features, they arrived on different announcements, and a lot of advertisers are tracking one while being exposed to the other.

Here is the straight version of what is changing, what it means if you run Search campaigns, and the audit worth doing before September.

What AI Max Actually Is

AI Max is a campaign-level setting for Search, not a new campaign type. Switched on, it lets Google's systems broaden how your ads are matched to queries well beyond traditional broad match, generate headline and description variations drawn from your site content and existing assets, and select landing pages dynamically based on inferred intent.

It spent roughly a year in beta and moved to general availability in 2026, then formally came out of beta on 11 June 2026 alongside improved targeting and creative quality and a set of stronger advertiser controls. Those controls matter more than the automation does, and we will come back to them.

The Two Deadlines

This is the part that catches people out. Google originally set a single September 2026 date for the whole transition, then split it after advertiser feedback.

September 2026: automatically created assets and campaign-level broad match

Campaigns relying on automatically created assets, or on the campaign-level broad match setting, begin auto-upgrading to AI Max in September 2026. This date has not moved. If either of those is switched on anywhere in your account, this is your deadline.

February 2027: Dynamic Search Ads

The Dynamic Search Ads sunset and automatic migration was pushed back from September 2026 to February 2027. Google Ads Liaison Ginny Marvin attributed the extension to advertiser feedback and a desire to avoid disrupting the Q4 period. Google also restored the ability to create new DSA campaigns from 15 June 2026, reversing an earlier phase-out step, though that ability is removed again in January 2027 immediately before automigration starts.

The practical read: the destination has not changed. Every DSA campaign still ends up on AI Max or an AI-powered Search campaign. What changed is that you now have a genuine testing window instead of a forced migration during your busiest quarter. Accounts running DSAs plus automatically created assets need a plan for both dates separately.

The Terms of Service Change Nobody Read

On 1 July 2026, Google's updated Google Ads terms took effect. They explicitly authorise Google's automated systems to "format, select, or generate targets, ads, or destinations" on an advertiser's behalf, which is a formal acknowledgement of how much of the ad creation process automation now handles by default. We covered the broader direction of travel in our piece on how AI is transforming Google and Meta Ads.

The terms applied to all accounts automatically. There was no acceptance step and no login prompt.

The consequential detail is not the permission, it is the liability. Responsibility for what the automation produces sits entirely with the advertiser. If AI-generated copy makes a claim your business cannot substantiate, that is your compliance problem, not Google's. Alongside this, Google has been rolling out disclosure labelling for AI-generated visual and audio assets.

Read together, the direction is clear enough: Google supplies more of the creative and targeting machinery, and steps further back from accountability for the output. That makes human review more important than it was, not less.

The Pre-Flight Audit

Before September, and before you let AI Max run anything unsupervised, work through the following.

  • Find out which deadline you are on. Check every Search campaign for automatically created assets and the campaign-level broad match setting. Those are the September cohort. List your DSA campaigns separately.
  • Refresh your negative keyword list. This is the single highest-value task. Broadened query matching will find searches your keyword list never would, and some of them will be irrelevant or actively unprofitable. A stale negative list is the main reason automation drifts into wasted spend. Our guide to Quality Score and CPC covers why relevance discipline still pays even under automated matching.
  • Set your text guidelines. These are the brand control layer governing AI-generated copy, available globally to all advertisers since February 2026 across both AI Max for Search and Performance Max. If you have not configured them, the automation is writing without your brand rules.
  • Apply URL and brand exclusions. Dynamic landing page selection can send traffic to pages you would never have chosen for a paid campaign. Restrict it deliberately.
  • Check your landing pages support your claims. If generated copy can pull from your site content, then your site content is effectively ad copy. Outdated pricing or lapsed offers on an old page become a liability.
  • Book the review time. Put a recurring weekly slot in the calendar to read search terms and generated assets. Automation without review is not a strategy.

Test It Properly, While You Still Can

The extended DSA window is worth using rather than waiting out. Run an AI Max campaign alongside your best-performing existing Search campaign for at least 30 days, on comparable budget, and judge it on your actual business metric rather than on platform-reported conversions alone.

Migrating manually also preserves your historical reporting and campaign learnings in a way an automatic upgrade may not. If you are weighing how much budget to put behind a test in the first place, our guide to setting a PPC budget is a reasonable starting point, and our Google Ads guide for small businesses covers the account structure fundamentals that make any test readable.

🚀 DigiWolf approach: we treat automation as something to be steered rather than trusted or refused. That means tight negatives, explicit brand guidelines, deliberate URL controls and a human reading the search terms every week. Book a free session if you want a second opinion before September.

The Bottom Line

AI Max is not optional in the long run, and the automation is genuinely capable. But the September 2026 date applies to automatically created assets and campaign-level broad match, the February 2027 date applies to Dynamic Search Ads, and conflating them is how accounts get upgraded before anyone is ready. Audit which cohort each campaign is in, tighten your controls, test on your own terms, and keep a person in the loop, because as of July the terms make it unambiguous that the results are your responsibility.
